KINE 1P90 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Superior Vena Cava, Inferior Vena Cava, Pulmonary Vein
Document Summary
Heart- expands and contracts to pump blood. Veins- carry blood back to the heart. Capillaries- take the blood in the tissue. The heart functions as a muscular pump that forces blood through the blood vessels. The blood serves as a fluid for transporting oxygen, nutrients, hormones and waste products, only transport system in the body. The vessels serve to deliver the blood to all the locations within the body and to return the blood back to the heart. Located within the thorax and rests upon the diaphragm. Apex- points down and to the left. Pericardial sac: double membrane that surrounds the heart. Serous pericardium: parietal pericardium (pericardial cavity/space [fluid filled]) surrounds everything, visceral pericardium (epicardium) From the outside in: epicardium (visceral pericardium), myocardium, endocardium. Right and left atria (atrium): receive blood from veins. Right and left ventricles: force blood out of the heart into arteries. Septum: separates the atria and ventricles on the left and right side.
