Self acceptance and reflection of self as seen in interaction with others. We define ourselves and find acceptance in expressing that self in relation to valued others. Value others are people whose reaction to us we actually care about. Phatic communion refers to communication between people (social politeness. When these norms are violated, we might judge the other person but if for example people kept ignoring our attempts to say hi how are you, we might think something wrong with us and self esteem would suffer. Self esteem comes from accumulation of experiences throughout our lives and interactions with others. Global self esteem: sense of self in general pretty stable by adulthood. Situational self esteem: self appraisals in particular situations. Task-specific self esteem: relates to specific tasks within specific situations. Attribution theory deals with how people explain their own success or failure in four dimensions. Self efficacy is our sense of how capable we are of doing something.
