Document Summary

Lecture 5: accessing words from the lexicon, (chapter 6: words) Use info from other words to identify some words. The cat chased the (slurred speech sound)-ouse . Probably decide final word is mouse rather than house. Most important controversy in field is the extent to which surrounding info influences the identification of words. Word recognition is mainly bottom-up or data-driven process. Trying to understand what"s in front of us, visually/auditorily, primarily based on what"s in front of us. Alternative to data-driven processing is top-down processing. Us general knowledge/hunches about what we"re processing to identify it. Top-down processing by itself is inefficient way to understand language. Won"t get far by ignoring someone and claim we know what they mean just b/c we think we do. So, words & understanding language must be mainly data-driven. Getting enough meaning from words to be able to construct a representation of the meaning of the sentence, which we can do something with.
