Recall: oral language is a biological system, meets 5 criteria: 1. Written lang on other hand is not a biological system is a sociocultural construct, is invented, like chess or driving (only existed for about 5 000 yrs, small amount of time compared to spoke) Governed by general cognitive processes, whereas spoken has unique cognitive processes, special parts of brain controls it. Grapheme: basic unit of written language; a letter or combo of letters that represent a phoneme (smallest unit in writing that affects meaning); not same as a letter. Ex: ghost = 5 letters, 4 graphemes (5 letters, 4 sounds); fish = 4 letters, 3 graphemes. A. each phoneme (sound) in language must be represented in the writing system (e. g. , have a grapheme) C. limited # of graphemes 40 phonemes, 70 graphemes. Visual system doesn"t transmit whole word image from page into lexicon. If we don"t recognize as whole units, recognize as component features.
