HLSC 1F90 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Allostatic Load, Homeostasis, The Strongest
Document Summary
Stressors demands, situations, or events that trigger physical and emotional reactions that are subjectively perceived to be stressful. The physical and emotional reactions to the stressor is known as the stress response. Stressors can be (cid:498)positive(cid:499) or (cid:498)negative(cid:499: positive stress = eustress (e. g. vacation, negative stress = distress (e. g. illness) Whether the stress comes from positive or negative stressors, a consistent physiological response occurs in the human body: general adaptation syndrome. The gas involves three progressive stages: stage 1 alarm. Characterized by almost instantaneous physical changes called fight-or-flight response (hormonal, cardiovascular, metabolic, and other changes) Alarm activates the autonomic nervous system (ans: ans is part of the central nervous system that regulates body processes such as heart rate, respiration, glandular functions. It is comprised of sympathetic nervous system (brings us up), and parasympathetic nervous system (brings us back down) para = paralyze.
