Lecture 1 (week 1, september 4 th , 2013) Dr. trevor norris introduction to foundations of education 1f95. Education is not a bucket you fill it"s a fire you spark mark twain. It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to hold a thought without accepting it . I entered the classroom with the conviction that it was crucial for me and every other student to be an active participant, not a passive consumer bell hooks. Education is the process by which we are formed as human beings, by which a society transforms itself. Furthermore, education is one of the most important and potentially effective ways we can fight oppression, injustice and inequality in our society by promoting equity and social justice. To understand education we must understand the culture in which it takes place. We must examine how that culture affects education, and how education in turn affects that culture.
