Phenomenology report on common meaning for several individuals about a particular phenomena. Ground theory move beyond description and generate a theory. Ethnography study of a culture of people. Case study some type of bounded group/environment to be studied in depth. Study of untreated syphilis in the negro male. When the study began they knew about syphilis, but did not know how it worked. Participants: 400 impoverished, poorly educated african-american men diagnosed with latent syphilis. At the beginning, these participants showed no obvious symptoms. Never treated for syphilis (even when penicillin became a standard cure in 1947) Researchers told them that because they had bad blood they would take care of them, give them free rides, food, and treatment (placebos)
