Chys 2p51: introduction to qualitative research methods in child and youth studies. Lecture 1 qualitative research and specific qualitative research approaches. Investigating underlying meanings, patterns, and relationships in social phenomena. How people make sense of their lives. Investigating phenomena using a variety of means or models. Multidisciplinary study of the development of children. Using quantitative studies we have been able to determine how many people have hiv. Using qualitative studies we have been able to understand why hiv rates are rising and spreading. Understand children"s attitudes and fear of aids, needle sharing practices in elusive communities, sexual practices, reasons behind unsafe behaviour, etc. We can use qualitative studies to understand why people behave or act the way they do. Example: in canada a thumbs-up means good job, but in australia a thumbs-up means fu.
