Teenage wasteland: sex, violence, and other youth moral panics. The word teenager" did not exist: some call it an invention b/c they thought it was made by consumer culture. Adulthood 16-17: you were a child, and then right away were an adult at this age. Three major factors led to the invention of the teenager": child labour laws, late 19th century: Restricted from factory and mining work: before this, children often worked in mines, because they had the advantage of small size that allowed them to fit into small places where grown men couldn"t, early 20th century: In this era, the car became affordable to young people ford model t" (1944) Affordable b/c of mass production and the assembly line. Ford model t saw with it the invention of drive in theaters and restaurants, and with that more freedom for teens to be alone together: high schools, growing population: 1911: 50% of 10-19 year olds in school.
