Lecture 3: teenage wasteland: sex, violence, and other youth moral panics. These are lenses, but can also be seen as stories stories of how young people mature: developmental: Teenager did not exist only had childhood and adulthood . Schooling optional what allowed for having just childhood then adulthood (didn"t always have to go to school, also had option to work odd jobs) Early marriage (16/17, what you did with/without parental consent was the norm), parenthood. Three major factors led to invention of the teenager: child labour laws, late 19th century: Started to see children were liabilities in dangerous situations (getting hurt quite a bit, was liability for owners of factories and stuff) Restricted from factory and mining work: early 20th century: Most provinces enact legislation to restrict employment of children beginning of era of anti-child labour laws realized that it wasn"t good use of young people"s time, should be at home or school: great depression.
