Document Summary

Maintaining cellularity: the number of cells within a tissue is influenced by two antagonistic processes: Cell proliferation: some cell types will proliferate throughout the life of an organism. E. g. epithelial cells lining skin: other cells do not divide at all once they have terminally differentiated. E. g. neurons in the brain: when cell proliferation occurs in a healthy organism, it serves a physiological purpose. Increase the size of a tissue to accommodate changing needs of body. If the number of cells increases, they compete for these signals and some will die off. Benign tumor: a tumor is an abnormal growth of cells that serves no meaningful function in the body. Caused by enhanced cellular proliferation: benign tumors are non-cancerous masses that can occur in a variety of different tissues. Large benign tumors can be life-threatening if they start to compress surrounding tissues. Characteristics of cancer cells: enhanced ability to proliferate.
