Document Summary

Week 11 screencast stem cells and cell death. Stem cells: stem cells are unspecialized cells that are able to differentiate into many cell types, pluripotent stem cells can differentiate into any cell type that would normally be found within an organism. For example, embryonic stem cells produce all specialized cell types during embryonic development: multipotent stem cells can only differentiate into several, but not all, of the specialized cells of an organism. Used to replenish specific cell populations in an adult organism: stem cells possess the ability to reproduce themselves throughout their lifespan. Allows them to maintain constant populations through the life of an organism: this can be done through asymmetric cell divisions. Initiates signaling on one side of cell which results in re-organization of cellular content: each polarized end of the cell becomes a new cell during cell division, stem cells can also divide symmetrically though.
