In order for humans to maintain a healthy diet humans must consume foods containing essential nutrients. Essential nutrients are nutrients required for normal body functioning and are not synthesized by the body. Thus, the nutrients must be obtained by consuming foods. Lipids and proteins take a part of the essential nutrients and are broken down in the body to carry out certain functions. Proteins partake multiple functions that are mandatory within the body. They are found in all cells that make up body tissues and organs. They also work as enzymes catalysts to help speed up reactions, and antibodies to fight off diseases. Lipids are useful as they provide the body with long-term energy, insulate against heat loss and form a protective cushion around major organs (3).
