Nature of infectious diseases i: contact with microorganisms rarely causes disease. When we do, what determines how serious it will be: organism, and people. What determines whether we will recover and if so, what determines whether that recovery will be rapid or prolonged: health care, ability to develop memory immune response. Is a consequence of a series of events. Infection: microbial survival and replication in host, again, not always a bad thing- we do have normal microbiota, doesn"t have to cause damage, commensals are also dividing on our body, survival and replication of the organism. Infection that causes damage or interferes with normal host functions: ranges from mild to severe: temporary to permanent, start to see symptoms- can be acute- short, chronic- long. Acquisition begins at birth (when we travel through the tract- develop our microbiome)- hence we can develop a condition if the mother has something. Colonisation with microorganisms present in mother"s reproductive tract.
