IMED1001: Lecture 2 Notes - Cells, Tissues, Organs
Learning Outcomes:
-Understanding the main principles behind primary tissues. !
-Functions of each tissue in broad terms. !
-Examples : How they are put together to form organs. !
Cells’ Function:
-Cells have specialised functions!
-Depends on STRUCTURE!
-Cell’s structure reflects on function:!
1. Shape!
2. Arrangement of nuclei!
3. Special features!
Tissues:
-Group of cells performing common function = tissues!
-Such cells can be structurally similar!
-May NOT be identical!
-Tissues make up ORGANS!
-4 tissue types!
4 Types of Tissues:
1. Epithelium!
2. Muscle Tissue!
3. Nervous Tissue!
4. Connective Tissue!
Epithelium:
-Main function is to form boundary membranes!
-It has control over what substances can cross!
-Eg. Intestine, urinary bladder, skin!
-SKIN - dry surface needs to be waterproof so epithelium does that !
-URINARY BLADDER - needs epithelium for stretch!
-INTESTINE - used to allow selective absorption of digested food AND to produce
digestive enzymes!
-Common features of epithelium:!
1. Cells control passage !
2. Generally nothing passes BETWEEN cells!
-Epithelium = COVERING AND LINING!
-Compact sheets of cells with little/no spaces between cells!
-Covering - of external surfaces!
-Lining - of hollow organs!

Document Summary

Imed1001: lecture 2 notes - cells, tissues, organs. Understanding the main principles behind primary tissues. Functions of each tissue in broad terms. Examples : how they are put together to form organs. Cell"s structure re ects on function: shape, arrangement of nuclei, special features. Group of cells performing common function = tissues. 4 types of tissues: epithelium, muscle tissue, nervous tissue, connective tissue. Main function is to form boundary membranes. It has control over what substances can cross. Skin - dry surface needs to be waterproof so epithelium does that. Urinary bladder - needs epithelium for stretch. Intestine - used to allow selective absorption of digested food and to produce digestive enzymes. Common features of epithelium: cells control passage, generally nothing passes between cells. Compact sheets of cells with little/no spaces between cells. Proteins in form of ne threads = laments. Can only be seen individually if have high magni cation (eg. em) Filaments slide against each other = movement.
