Document Summary

Understand that we can: extracellular digestion of large food masses. Sphincters and valves control speed of transit of food in tract. Chemical digestion = smaller constituents thus can absorb. General layers of wall, vary throughout the tract. Mucosa"s epithelium is simple columnar, except mouth and anus = stratified squamous. Muscularis mucosa in mucosa when contract, causes mucosa to fold. Adentitia especially at mouth and anus, binds to surrounding tissues. Mesentries = sheets of peritoneum suspend organs in place. Allows movement of food and binds to surrounding walls. Peritoneal fluid = allow organs to move, mixing and m=churning during digestion. Retroperitoneal organs = behind peritoneum, at the back attached to the posterior body wall. Intraperitoneal organs = enclosed with peritoneum, but not in peritoneal cavity. ** vagus nerve supplies heart, lungs, gut. Ens: only in the gut, short reflexes, doesn"t require brain and sc. Composed of 2 networks: myenteric plexus and submucosal plexus.
