Document Summary
--this week we introduce the importance of recognising and addressing ethical dilemmas. --in the lecture i ask us to consider the defining elements of an ethical dilemma, and introduce three of seven or so ethical theories that are intended to guide us in our approaches to resolving dilemmas. --over the following two weeks we will examine the remaining theories, and consider how to tie these into our professional obligations (concerning the law, codes of ethics, etc. ). As you have read chapter 5 in your bailey text you will be familiar with some of the language. --socrates: we are speaking of no small matter, but how we ought to live. ". --ethical (ethically significant) when our conduct affects the interests (wellbeing, health, etc. ) of others. --dilemma a situation in which a difficult choice has to be made between two or more [unfavourable] alternatives (oed) --these different perspectives allow us to develop a more nuanced account of ethical action and judgement.
