Document Summary
Pharmacokinetics- what the body does to the drug. Use adme to consider how long it takes to die from aerosol use (directly cardiotoxic: once breathed in the solvent crosses very rapidly into the lungs, the heart, arteries and can kill in approximately 10 seconds. Environmental chemicals- man-made and natural sources: tend to consider only man-made chemicals but the environment contains over 30,000 chemical entities, some are plant derived and other organisms may have toxic effects in humans. Toxic metals: organic chemicals studies more widely but metals can be severely toxic. Absorption: concentration is a major determinant of absorption, hydrophobic character also determines xenobiotic absorption (octanol: water partition coefficient used to reflect hydrophobicity, significant routes of absorption include oral, pulmonary and dermal routes. Simple diffusion is governed by the permeability of the membrane and the concentration gradient. P= permeability coefficient, which measures mobility of xenobiotic in medium of diffusion path.
