BIOS1170 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Cellular Respiration, Elastic Fiber, Partial Pressure

31 views5 pages

Document Summary

Supplies oxygen needed for aerobic energy (aerobic metabolism) waste product is carbon dioxide. Regulates ph (regulating amount of carbon dioxide) Gas exchange system where oxygen shifted into blood and co2 shifted out of blood. External respiration = moving gas between external environment and the lungs. Internal respiration = utilization of oxygen by cells. Designed to overcome resistances if these resistances increase > movement of gas through the system will decrease = less oxygen to cells and tissues, decreases removal of co2. Respiratory care aims to decrease resistance eg. remove mucus. Gas will move down a pressure gradient from higher to lower pressure. Rapid movement of large amounts of gas (mouth area eg. on cold day breathing out) No difference in pressure between compartments, but differences in composition of the gas. Gas will move down a partial pressure concentration gradient from a higher to lower concentration.
