Lecture 4 – 12/3/18 – Verbs (the Sequel)
Transitive verb
- A type of action verb that carries an action from a does (the subject) to a recipient (the
object)
Objects are typically nouns, noun phrases, or pronouns
- Birds (noun)
- A dog named Spock (noun phrase)
- Her (pronoun)
Some verbs can take two objects (a direct object and an indirect object)
- Sally READ her daughter a BOOK
- (Sally READ a BOOK to her daughter)
Not all action verbs are transitive
- Ogden slept/blinked
- Ogden slept (on the couch) – still intransitive
Intransitive verb
- An action verb that does not have a direct object
- John DANCED (intransitive)
- John DANCED the tango (transitive)

Active vs passive voice
- Active voice
➢ Doer + verb + recipient of an action
- Passive voice
➢ Recipient of an action + verb + (optional) doer
Only transitive sentences can be made passive (we need the object to turn it passive)
