Document Summary

Much of epidemiology is concerned with measuring (= estimating) the effect of a drug on an outcome. Refers to any systematic error in estimating the effect of a drug, exposure or risk factor on a specified outcome. Informal confounding occurs when two factors are associated with each other, or travel together and the effect of one is confused with or distorted by the effect of the other. Bias that arises due to measurement error in the variables used in the analysis: e. g. might arise if dispensing records are used to identify women exposed to hrt, which is taken for several indications. Information bias may occur to the extent that women taking hrt for indications other than perimenopausal symptoms or perceived cardio-protection are included in the sample. The keys to addressing within-study bias are study design and employing specific methods within study designs.
