SCI1020 Lecture 3: Part 1c Exploring Data

Document Summary

If the data is carved we have to use something other than a linear function. We can use an exponential function or a power law. Deterministic relationships help us to predict the y from the x. They have variation, therefor it is not deterministic. Even though a high correlation is calculated the plot can show a pattern ie curved. Functions are the building blocks of mathematical models they describe how a dependent variable (y) changes with respect to an independent va. We represent a function with an equation and its graph. Constants a,b,b,a are particular to the study involved. Exponential is more specific while power law is more for general curves. As you go along each step multiply its new value by the x variable. 1,2,4,8,16,32,64 just like binary fission of a cell. Y = initial amount times the growth factor raised to the x variable. B is the growth factor (year before + a % of the year before)
