Lecture 8 – Geographical Analysis with GIS
GIS
• Computer-based systems for collection, management, processing, analysis,
integration and visualisation of geographical information
• Geographical analysis functions in GIS
o Spatial query
o Spatial analysis
o Spatial modelling
o Spatial visualisation
Buffer
• Define all of the spaces within a certain distance of a spatial object, or a group
of spatial objects
• Point buffer
• Line buffer
• Area buffer
Overlay
• An operation for comparing and analysing multiple map data layers
simultaneously
• An approach to integration of geographical data
• Involve creation of a new layer be combining several existing layers
o The value at a location in the new layer is a function of the
independent values associated with that location on the existing layers
Reclassify
• Reclassify map categories
o I.E. assign thematic values to the categories of an existing map
• Reclassify agricultural and urban-residential land to 1 and others to 0
o 1 - critical
o 0 - non critical
Network Analysis
• To characterise the network (e.g. road, pipeline, river, etc) and to model the
movement of goods, services, energy, information or even people throughout
the network
o Finding the shortest route or the time taken to pass from A to B
o Determining which facility or vehicle is closet
o Generating travel directions
o Finding a service area around a site
Surface Analysis
• To characterise surfaces or files (such as elevation surfaces and temperature
surfaces) by deriving surfaces parameters
o Slope - the steepness of a surface (e.g. terrain)
o Aspect - the direction in which the plane fitted to the slope on a given
part of a surface faces
o Visibility - the visibility of parts of surfaces

Document Summary
Gis: computer-based systems for collection, management, processing, analysis, integration and visualisation of geographical information, geographical analysis functions in gis, spatial query, spatial analysis, spatial modelling, spatial visualisation. Buffer: define all of the spaces within a certain distance of a spatial object, or a group of spatial objects, point buffer, line buffer, area buffer. Overlay: an operation for comparing and analysing multiple map data layers simultaneously, an approach to integration of geographical data. Involve creation of a new layer be combining several existing layers: the value at a location in the new layer is a function of the independent values associated with that location on the existing layers. Reclassify: reclassify map categories, i. e. assign thematic values to the categories of an existing map, reclassify agricultural and urban-residential land to 1 and others to 0, 1 - critical, 0 - non critical.
