Document Summary

Objectives: understand the transcription process of prokaryotes understand structure and function of rna polymerase. Overview of prokaryotic and eukaryotic transcription + translation note the segregation in translation and transcription in eukaryotes note that prokaryotic translation and transcription proceed simultaneously. Rna - > is single stranded, but does not simply behave like a piece of linear string, its intramolecular base pairing defines its 3-d shape ( clover leaf, hair pin etc. ) *the intramolecular base pairings in rna are composed of hydrogen bonds. Dna as a template : the double stranded structure of dna is unwound during transcription, with one strand designated as the coding strand while the other is the template strand. Which strand is which, top or bottom , will depend on the gene to be transcribed, and promoter orientation. In transcription, the template dna strand is always read from the 3" to 5" direction. While rna is transcribed in the 5" - 3" direction.
