Lecture 14 Seagrasses
Seagrasses
Vascular plants
Angiosperms (flowering plants) restricted to growth in marine environments
Some estuarine
o Need to have salinity >5 parts per thousand in order to grow
Most species are subtidal
o Some intertidal (e.g. Zostera, Halophila)
Found in all continents except Antarctica
Seagrasses Diversity
Found in estuaries and coastal waters with sand and mud bottoms
o Down to >30 m in clear sea
Worldwide: 50-60 species, 12 genera
o In Australia: 11 genera (30 species)
Temperate: Zostera, Heterozostera, Amphibolis, Posidonia
Tropical: Halodule, Cymbodecea, Syringodium
4 families
o Hydrocharitaceae
o Zosteraceae
o Posidoniaceae
o Cymodoceaceae
Ecological groups
o Meadow forming
Amphibolis high wave energy costs, unstable sediment
Heterozostera Eastern Australia, mainly intertidal
o Primary colonisers
After disturbance of sediments
Halophila, Heterozostera, Zostera
o Late colonisers
Come after primary colonisers
Posidonia
Structure and Function
Rhizomatous, clonal plants
o Occupy space through production of more shoots via rhizomes
Strong, creeping
Poor developed vascular system, xylem and phloem
Asexual reproduction
o Main mechanisms for proliferation
o Few exceptions: Zostera marina (Europe) sexual produce seeds
o Zostera marina: Genetic Diversity
Spatial scale 12-12,000 km
Method = KNA microsatellites
High diversity indicates outcrossing
Low diversity indicates vegetative propagation / inbreeding
Results: populations varied from monoclonal (all plants same
genotype) to maximal diversity (every plant different genotype)
Ability to cope morphology
