Notable Scientists
•1665 - Robert Hooke
-Created the home made light microscope!
Studied cells in thin slices of cork
-First person to use the term “cell”
•Late 1600’s - Anton van Leeuwenhoek
- Dutch amateur microscopist!
Described bacteria, protozoa, blood, sperm
- Proclaimed existence of microscopic animals that he called “animalcules”
•1833 - Robert Brown
-English scientist
-Studied the microscopic structure of reproductive organs of plants
-Was the first to discover the nucleus, and believed it was the fundamental
requirements for cells
-Believed that the nucleus was a constant feature and that nuclei are fundamental
units of all living organisms
-Also coined ‘Brownian movement’, which is the constant and erratic movement of
cell components
•1839 – Theodor & Schwann
-German biologists
-They discovered that cells define the nature of all tissue.
-Found that animal cells “exactly resembles... [the] cellular tissues of plants”
-They then developed the cell theory.
Cell Theory
•Developd by Theodor Schwann and German botanist Matthais Schleiden
•Generated their Three Postulates:
(i) All living organisms are composed of one or more nucleated cells
(ii) Cells are the minimum functional units of living organisms
(iii) Cells arise only from pre existing cells by a process of division
•In 1880, August Weissman introduced an important corollary to these postulates which
was:
•cells living today can trace their ancestry back to ancient times"
