Week 6 -Transnational policing
• Policing (as an activity)
o The process of preventing and detecting crime &maintaining order
o Undertaken by a number of agencies and individuals
▪ members of the public, the private sector, and locally based organizations
like neighbourhood watch
• The police (as an institution)
o Responsible for many services tenuously related to maintaining order or preventing
crime
o Can be considered as an oppressive military force
▪ Difficulty in gaining legitimacy
• Police legitimacy:
o implies that the police are granted special authority by those in power
o either by an elite within the society, an occupying force, or the community as a
whole
