Human research
Human research as defined in the National Statement on Ethical
Conduct in Human Research (2007) is “research conducted with or
about people, or their data or tissue. Human participation in
research is therefore to be understood broadly, to include the
involvement of human beings through:
Taking part in surveys, interviews or focus groups
General principles
Integrity of the researcher, and research merit
-Commitment to the pursuit and protection of truth
-Commitment to research methods designed to contribute to
knowledge
Respect for persons, and consent
-Respect for the inherent dignity and rights of persons
-Commitment not to use a person only as a means to an end
Beneficence (no harm) and safety
Justice
-Issue of who ought to benefit from the research and who will
bear its burdens
General guidelines
1. Participation should be voluntary and informed. Participation should be
aware of the risks associated with a study, provide consent to
participate, and be allowed to end their participation whenever they
choose. Any information that might influence someone’s willingness to
take part in a study must be disclosed in advance
2. Participants should not be exposed to harmful or dangerous
procedures; this includes both physical and psychological harm. Mild
discomfort is permitted, as long as no lasting damage is expected and
participants are fully aware of the potential discomfort.
