PHYS20008 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Pituitary Gland, Efferent Nerve Fiber, Central Nervous System
Lecture 7: Graded potentials and circuits:
Overview of the brain:
Brainstem: This is responsible for visceral regulation- thoughts and movements that
are automatic and don’t require a lot of thinking (e.g. blood pressure, respiration
etc.)
Diencephalon: This part of the brain is divided into 2 parts: The Thalamus and the
Hypothalamus
oThalamus: Relays motor an sensory signals to cerebral cortex
oHypothalamus: Links the nervous system to the endocrine system via the
pituitary gland
Pituitary gland: This is otherwise known as the ‘master gland’ as it regulates most
hormones. It is located hanging underneath the hypothalamus (of diencephalon).
*It is strategically placed where it is to coordinate both behavioural responses from the
cortex, and visceral responses from diencephalon (eg. Hunger: This causes the visceral
response to want to keep the body alive, the behavioural response is to go look/make food)
Cortex: This is the biggest part of the brain that is in control of conscious thinking:
behaviour, organisation and planned movements
Central nervous system:
Recall that neurons will act in a system if triggered/stimulated by a signal from sensory
receptors which then communicate with relevant neurons in order to create a response.
There are many neurons in the CNS branching and communicating with multiple, different
neurons, not just one and in a linear format:
Sensory neurons: Somatic senses and smell and vision
Interneurons of CNS: Variable and several
Efferent neuron
