Lecture 7
- Afferent system → Sensory receptors out in environment → coming into CNS (brain
and spinal cord)
- Efferent system → coming out of CNS → going to elicit effects we need
- Viscera: things that regulate internal environment, autonomic nervous system (things
we do subconsciously, regulating heart rate, respiratory rate, digestion, fluid balance)
- Way we interact and respond to changes in external environment
- Brain: 3 parts
- Brainstem: takes care of visceral functions: regulating heart rate, respiratory
parameters, blood pressure, things that keep us alive on daily basis, don’t have to
think about it, gets sensory input from periphery → makes decisions on its own →
sends out output and makes adjustments without us noticing
- Diencephalon: thalamus and hypothalamus, do regulatory things require for day to
day survival but requires more complex behavioural solutions, hunger → low on
glucose, need nourishment → need to elicit response to create behavioural response,
hypothalamus positioned in the middle of brain to recognise hunger and elicit
behavioural response, ability to elicit behavioural response is coming down efferent
pathway (ability to interact with environment)
- Cortex: where complex ideas and thoughts are generated and processed, a lot of
motor movements occur
- Autonomic pathway mostly brainstem, basic reflex processing, essential to keep us
alive
- Somatic motor neurons has more voluntary movement, require higher brain centres
- Enteric nervous system: brain in gut, many neurons surrounding gut, effects on
autism and depression, more bacteria in gut than cells in body, people who have
depression and anxiety lack a certain type of bacteria in gut, depressed mice have
bacteria infused into gut and alleviate the systems

- right : efferent neuron (starts at CNS, goes somewhere else)
- Sensory neuron: detect things out (touch at tip of index finger), cell body is
somewhere more central in body, sends out projection where dendrites are, senses
are in finger delivering signal, axons travel all the way back past cell body and move
down to end
