NEUR30003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Gliogenesis, Astrocyte, Spina Bifida
Document Summary
Lecture 2. 2 development of the nervous system. Processes that shape the brain during development are continually involved in adapting the function of the brain to changing environments learning. Harnessing developmental mechanisms is a potentially useful strategy to repair the brain or to slow neurodegenerative disease. Construction of the nervous system involves a series of integrated steps. Neural induction: assigning neural potential to a region of early embryo. Inducing the fate of some tissue in early embryo fated to become neuronal tissue. Neurulation: forming the rudimentary nervous system (rolling up on neural plate to form neural tube -> becomes brain and spinal cord (cns) Neurogenesis: production of neurons and glia from precursor cells. Neuronal migration: neurons move from sites of production to their positions in the mature brain (settle in part of brain where they function) Axon growth and pathfinding to find appropriate targets and dendritic arborization: once they arrive they develop branches.
