ANAT30007 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Foramen Magnum, Vertebral Compression Fracture, Nerve Root
Document Summary
Lecture 5. 2 msk imaging of the back. Vertebral bodies increase in size going from cervical to lumbar (weight bearing) Wider vertebral canal: cervical and lumbar area have larger number of nerve roots exiting to supply upper and lower limb. Thoracic transverse processes have additional costal facets for connection with ribs cervical transverse processes have foramina that allow passage of vertebral arteries. No body has anterior and posterior arch. Lateral masses that articular with occipital bone above and articulate with c2 belwo. Posteriorly it has a more normal spinous process (bifid nature of cervical spine) Extending from upper part of odontoid process to inner aspect of foramen magnum = alar ligaments. Extending superiorly and inferiorly from odontoid process. Transverse band of cruciform ligament (much larger) important in holding the dens stable. X-ray source produces radiation that passes through the person and hits the detector. Detector starts off white and once it is hit by x-rays, it darkens.
