Document Summary

Lecture 29 human evolutionary anatomy (skull, thorax, back) Our place in evolution order = primates, family = hominidae, genus = homo, species = homo sapiens. There are more than 300 species of primates, non-human primates are confined to tropical regions important because many adaptation relate to tropical environments. Humans are most closely related to chimpanzees, then gorillas, then orang- utans, then old world monkeys then new world monkeys then lemurs. Primate radiation occurred around 63 million years ago. Lemurs = vertical clingers and leapers, back upright (shared with humans) but use all 4 limbs to jump and climb, hind limb dominant pattern of locomotion, use tail. New world (geologically new) primates = arboreal quadrupeds, semibrachiators (swing with arms and make use of tail, which is prehensile) Old world monkeys = quadrupeds: arboreal land on all 4 limbs when jumping in trees, terrestrial (babboons) put weight on digits (mcs and carpals off the ground), weight between 4 limbs.
