Document Summary

Fibularis longus: from head and proximal 2/3 of lateral fibula to plantar base of 1st metatarsal and medial cuneiform. Fibularis brevis: from distal 2/3 of lateral surface of fibula to dorsal surface of tuberosity on lateral side of 5th metatarsal. Actions: eversion and weak plantar flexion, maintains arch of foot. Hamstring tendons: semitendinosus and semimembranosus (medial border), biceps femoris (lateral border) Sciatic nerve divides into tibial & common fibular nerves. Lateral (from fibular) and medial (from tibial) sural nerves. Note: difficult to palpate pulse of popliteal a. Clinical significance: compression of common peroneal n. at lateral knee. Contains muscles, tibial nerve & posterior tibial vessels. Posterior tibial artery gives off fibular artery (sends perforating branches to lateral compartment) Tibial n. enters between gastrocnemius & under soleus. Tenoperiostitis (shin splints): tendon and muscle attachments to the periosteum around the tibia become inflamed due to overuse. Tibialis anterior causes pain during eversion, tibialis posterior can also cause tenoperiostitis.
