Erik erikson: we all proceed through a series of psychosocial crises. Infants and toddlers progress through trust vs. mistrust and autonomy vs. shame and doubt. If caregivers meet infant"s needs and attention, a sense of trust will develop. Easy child: usually positive mood, unpleasant moods are mild; responds well to novelty in food, situations, routines, and strangers; regular in sleep and feeding schedules; accepts frustration with little fuss. Difficult child: intense and frequent unpleasant moods, cries often; responds poorly to novelty in food, situations, routines, and strangers; irregular in sleep and feeding schedules; reacts to frustration with crying and tantrums. 2-3 months: social smile, distinguishes happiness, anger, surprise, and sadness. 6-8 months: fear, stranger anxiety, and separation protest occur. 18-24 months: self-conscious emotions appear, develops vocabulary for talking about emotions. The parent-child relationship is an important context for developing emotional regulation skills. Direct intervention, modeling, selective reinforcement, control of the environment, verbal instruction, and touch.
