Document Summary
Chapter 7 (pp 150-169): determining the function of behavior. Purpose of behavior = desirable outcomes or consequences. Need to attend to both the form and the function of behavior. Symptom substitution - appearance of a new inappropriate behavior based on underlying disturbance inappropriate communicative behavior - often maintained by positive reinforcement. To gain attention - to engage in social interaction; peers or adults. To gain a tangible - object, activity, event; attempts at communicating want for tangible may be inappropriate. To gain sensory stimulation - humming, blowing spit bubbles, pinching themselves, slapping their ears, rocking their body. To escape from attention or interactions - getting away from a situation they find unpleasant or aversive. To escape from tasks - too difficult or too easy. To escape from internal stimulation that is painful/uncomfortable - to move to a more comfortable seat, take an aspirin, tell doctor symptoms, etc. Select and teach an appropriate behavior to replace an inappropriate behavior.
