Document Summary

Neurons: receives info and transmit it to other cells. Santiago ramon y cajal, a pioneer of neuroscience. Charles sherrington and santiago ramon y cajal are founders of neuroscience. Membrane: structure that separates the inside of a cell from the outside environment. Mitochondrion: structure that performs metabolic activities providing energy that cell uses for all activities. Ribosomes: sites at which cell synthesizes new protein molecules. Endoplasmic reticulum: network of thin tubes that transport newly synthesized proteins to other locations. Larger neurons have dendrites soma, axon and presynaptic terminals. Motor neuron: soma in spinal cord receives excitation through dendrites and conduct impulses along axon into muscle. Sensory neuron: specialized at one end to be highly sensitive to particular type of stimulation (light, sound, touch) Dendrites: branching fibers that get narrowers near their ends. Lined with specialized synaptic receptors receives info from other neurons. Dendritic spines: short outgrowths that increase surface area available for synapses. Cell body, soma: contains nucleus, ribosomes and mitochondria.
