Spontaneous-response tasks show that children can atribute false beliefs before 4 (which was originally thought to be when ability emerged when using elicited response tasks) Elicited response tasks- child is directly asked a quesion about another person"s false belief: ex) example from class: sally hides a marble in a basket and while she is gone, Child is asked where sally will look for the marble when she returns. 4 year olds answer correctly, and 3 year old point at box, indicaing that they do not yet understand that sally has a false belief. In second and third familiarizaion trials, hand reached inside box and paused. During test trial, hand reached inside either the yellow or green box and then paused. Found that children looked longer when hand reached to locaion that they had not expected hand to look in, indicaing that they understood hand"s false belief.
