Increase in population and titles, increasing taxes on businesses. Government began selling the things they got from taxation: government monopolies over iron, salt, liquor, grain. Many different interpretations of confucianism appeared as scholars taught students in different ways and interpreted the text differently. Sima qian wrote history: records of the grand historian. Han tried to make peace with xiongnu but the people didn"t like it. Sent ambassadors to other regions to learn about them and try to ally with them in order to defeat the xiongnu. Took over korea and vietnam (111 bce) Tributary system: states and tribes sent gifts and received gifts in return: reduced cost of defense, made them think they were the center of civilization. Recruited xiongnu to serve as auxiliary forces. State-run ironworking factories: chinese metalworking most advanced.
