Population - group of individuals of same species that live in same area at the same time. Population ecology - study of how and why number of individuals in population changes over time and space. Most species identification guides show the range or geographic distribution, of different species. Abiotic factors such as temperature, rainfall, presence of mountains, etc. Biotic factors such as past & current presence of other species. Range are dynamic -in constant flux as abiotic and biotic factors change over time. Population density - the number of individuals per unit area. Individual organisms can be arranged in different patterns within populations. Random - if position of each individual is independent of the others, as may occur when seeds are dispersed by the wind. Clumped - if quality of the habitat is patchy or the organisms associate in social groups. Uniform - if negative interactions occur among individuals, such as competition for space, water or other resources.
