Document Summary
Chapter 1: evolution, the themes of biology, and scientific inquiry. Evolution: the process of change that has transformed life on earth from its earliest beginnings to the diversity of organisms living today. Biology is a quest, an ongoing inquiry about nature of life. Life is recognized by what living things do. 1. 1 the study of life reveals common themes. Ways of thinking about life that will hold true decades from now: organization, information, energy and matter, interactions, evolution. Reductionism: reduces complex systems to simpler components that are more manageable to study. Approach to see novel properties emerge at each level that are absent from preceding level. Example: box of bicycle parts won"t transport, but when put together certain way it can move. Systems biology: exploration of a biological system by analyzing the interactions among its parts. Example: how does a gradual increase in carbon dioxide in air alter ecosystems and the entire biosphere.
