Document Summary

Polar covalent bond is a bond between two or more atoms that unequally share their electrons. A polar molecule is a molecule with its overall charge unevenly distributed. Water is polar bc of its v shape and the unequal sharing of electrons between the hydrogens and the oxygen. Solution: liquid that is a completely homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. Aqueous solution: solution in which the solute is dissolved in water/water is the solvent. Hydrophobic dislikes water e. g. substances that are nonionic/nonpolar e. g. Hydrophobic dislikes water e. g. substances that are nonionic/nonpolar e. g. oil. Hydrogen ion: single proton with a charge of 1+ Hydroxide ion: water molecule that lost a proton that has a charge 1- Hydronium ion: a water molecule with an extra proton bonded. Acid: substance that increases the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution. Base: substance that reduces the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution.
