Case study: new york city"s zero waste campaign. Since new york closed the fresh kills landfill in stanten island, they have spent per ton in exporting the waste. The new york city zero waste campaign speaks for over 40 organizations to release a community-based waste management program. The plan was to reduce waste exportation to zero through waste prevention, reuse, recycling, and composting. Waste management places a tremendous financial burden on society because we have failed for. 50 years to move away from being a waste-oriented society. Waste stream: waste we produce from our homes and businesses, manufacturing, agriculture, and others. Municipal solid waste (msw): solid waste from our urban areas. Paper is the most abundant material found in landfills. Dilute and disperse: factories were located near rivers in the hopes that they would dilute the wastes which resulted in polluted rivers.
