Subliminal perception: bargh et al, 1996- participants were asked to form sentences from groups of words (ex. Electroencephalograph (eeg: measures the brain"s electrical activity first used in the 1920"s, it showed that the brain does not become inactive during sleep as previously thought. Sleep stages- wakefulness beta waves: short irregular waves, desynchronized, alert and attentive alpha waves, moderate regular waves, synchronized, relaxed, eyes closed. Sleep stages- stage 1 theta waves transition from wakefulness to sleep: easily awoken, may "see" geometric shapes, fantastical images lasts ~ 10 minutes. Sleep stages- stage 3 & 4 delta waves: large regular waves, slow-wave sleep-wake difficult too awaken; disoriented if they do wake up still process relevant information. Sleep disorders insomnia obstructive sleep apnea narcolepsy: rem behavior disorder. Insomnia the inability to sleep that results in a decline in a person"s metal health and ability to function often related to feelings of depression: major cause: anxiety over falling asleep.
