Document Summary
Sensation - detection of physical stimuli from world around us and sending that information to the brain: physical stimuli = light waves, sound waves, food molecules, odor molecules, temperature changes, pressure changes on skin. Perception - brain"s further processing of sensory information: processing results in our conscious experience of the world. Although we all experience the same sensory input (sensation), we experience the input differently (perception. Imagine driving up to traffic signal as it turns green: green light is actually the physical stimulus in form of light waves, stimulus detected by specialized cells called sensory receptors. Receptor"s detection of the stimulus is sensation: transduction. Sensory receptors change the stimulus input to signals the brain can understand. Enormous amount of physical stimulation from the world reaches your sensory receptors, but you do not notice much of it. Physical stimulation must go beyond some level before experiencing sensation.
