Chapter 14- mendel and the gene idea: 1865: mendel stated he had worked out the rules of inheritance. Parent generation p p x w. F1 (self pollination) f2 3p + 1w. Due to the white flower in f2, white is not blended with the purple, but masked by the heritable factor for the purple flower. Disappeared then reappeared characteristic = recessive: mendel"s law of segregation: allele pairs separate during gamete formation and randomly unite at fertilization, each somatic cell has 2 alleles per gene. Pp xpp = pp: phenotype= color and traits, genotype= homozygous vs. heterozygous, testcross: used to determine the genotype of a dominant phenotype. Recessive offspring will only occur if the dominant parent is heterozygous: mendel"s law of independent assortment: how different genes independently separate from one another when reproductive cells develop. Yellow and wrinkly aren"t related to each other: probability: 0-1 scale from impossible to possible. # of times event can occur/all possible events = probability.
