Document Summary

Course of development- typically develops during late adolescence or early adulthood. In most cases there is a slower, more gradual decline in functioning. The period of gradual deterioration is called the prodromal phase or prodrome. (unusual thoughts and abnormal perceptions) as well as waning interest in social activities, difficulty meeting responsibilities of daily living and impaired cognitive functioning. Psychotic episodes can begin. (wild hallucinations, delusions and increasingly bizarre behavior. The next phase is the residual phase where behavior returns to the level of the prodrome phase. Psychotic episodes may take a break, but they may still be unable to function due to paranoia, hallucinations or delusions. Drugs can help control it and being put into social situation as well, but schizophrenia is a chronic disease and it is rare that it disappears. Typically, patients just begin to develop patterns of up and downs with and without medication.
