CCJ-3666 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Case Report, Victimisation, Victimology
Document Summary
Researchers and policy makers typically rely upon three major data sources for measuring the level of crime. The irst source, oicial records of police departments, is the tradiional depository for crime informaion. However, dissaisfacion with police records prompted researchers to look elsewhere. Surveys that ask people about ofenses they have commited became a popular alternaive. Unfortunately these surveys are not conducted on an annual or naional basis and they tell very litle about the vicims of crime. A 3rd tacic is to quesion individuals about instances in which they were vicimized. This is the most cited data source today. The most widely cited measure of crime is the ucr by fbi. The ucr is characterized by a number of interesing and advantageous features. First, crime data are compiled annually from jurisdicions throughout the country. This allows comparisons from year to year to take place.
