Document Summary

One underlying development that has boosted interest in the elderly is due to medical advances. Changes in nutriion, healthier lifestyles, the availability of medical resources, and advances in medical knowledge have increased the life expectancy of both men and women. Life expectancy refers to the number of years that the average person should live. This steady increase in life expectancies suggests that the absolute number of senior ciizens in the united states will coninue to grow. Figure 12. 1 shows the populaion of people 65 years or older will be 88. 5 million in 2050 and is steadily increasing. 20% of the american populaion will be 65 or older by the year 2030. The absolute increase in the number of elderly should equate with an increased number of crimes against the elderly. Given their numbers, the elderly form a considerable voing consituency. Voter registraion and voter turnout tend to increase noiceably with age.
