BIOL-2230 Chapter Notes - Chapter 27: Seminiferous Tubule, Ischial Tuberosity, Ejaculatory Duct
Document Summary
Reproductive system: organ system that functions to produce offspring. Testis: male primary reproductive organ that produces sperm; male gonad. Tunica: a covering or tissue coat; membrane layer. Seminiferous tubules: highly convoluted tubes within the testes; form sperm. Interstitial endocrine cells: cells located in the loose connective tissue surrounding the seminiferous tubules; they produce androgens (most importantly testosterone), which are secreted into the surrounding interstitial fluid. Perineum: that region of the body spanning the region between the ischial tuberosities and extending from the pubic arch to the coccyx. Epididymis: that portion of the male duct system in which sperm mature. Ductus (vas) deferens: extends from the epididymis to the urethra; propels sperm into the urethra by peristalsis during ejaculation. Urethra: canal through which urine passes from the bladder (and semen passes from the ejaculatory duct in the male) to outside the body. Prostate: accessory reproductive gland; produces one-third of semen volume, including fluids that activate sperm.
